Bright & Bold Baby Blanket

5 March 2016 by Naomi Leave a Comment

Today I am really just dropping by quickly, Matthew is napping and Emma is momentarily entertained but time is of the essence!

I just wanted to share my latest crochet make now that it has been finished and gifted, before I forget to share it at all! If you follow me on Instagram you may have seen some of its progress already.

I have recently been made an auntie again to my new gorgeous little nephew Douglas. Of course he needed to have a lovely little crochet blanket 🙂 I am not generally one for pastel shades and happily I think his mum tends to agree so I opted for a bright and bold spectrum of colours just as suitable for a baby boy as any powdery pale blue.

However, I did stick to traditional 4 round granny squares with a wide granny border as far as design goes. This blanket is made using Stylecraft Special DK, of course 😉 The shades are Spring Green, Saffron, Turquoise, Spice and Lipstick. I joined the squares using slip stitches in the back loops only in alternating colours, but I forgot to take any pictures of the reverse side of the blanket, sorry!

The Siblings Project 2016 – February

18 February 2016 by Naomi Leave a Comment

It doesn’t feel at all like a month has passed since my first Sibling Project post!

Last month I wrote about how Matthew had started to crawl which meant he could take evasive action from unwanted sibling affection. This month however, he is much faster and more sure of himself and uses this to shower Emma with her fair share of over enthusiastic sibling love. If his big sister is within reach he wants to be touching, poking, pulling, sitting, climbing or dribbling on her!

For the most part Emma is still very accommodating and in some instances just as forgiving. We had a moment this week where without us realising what was happening Matthew pulled a whole handful of hair from her poor little head! There were tears and cuddles and then she was right back to rolling about with him… and he was right back to trying get her hair. I have had quite a few conversations with Emma this month about when will Matthew be bigger/grown up/walking/talking, I think she has come to the conclusion that he will be even more fun to play with or boss about then.

Mostly this month I am just glad to see how much they love one another, and how it seems to be growing all the time. I wondered if at some point Emma would grow a little bored of her baby brother, if the novelty would wear off? But that is simply not the case, she is forever keeping him entertained, performing to make him (and herself) laugh and trying her best to help him. New for February she seems to have decided to take on the role of teacher, cries of  ‘I’m just trying to teach him to walk mummy!’ are both amusing and worrying. For Matthews part, like I said he can’t get enough!

Shawl Collar Sleeveless Crochet Jumper

8 February 2016 by Naomi 1 Comment

You might remember, waaayyy back in October, I was working on a little granny square jumper for Matthew. Well by the end of October I was close to finishing but ran out of cream yarn….. so I put it in a project bag waiting to order the yarn I needed…. and promptly forgot all about it.

Last week I pulled it out and realised I still haven’t got any cream but if he doesn’t wear it now he will out grow it!

So I had a quick look, decided I could forgo the addition of sleeves and skipping the last two rows I’d intended for the bottom edge wouldn’t be the end of the world. I sewed in the ends and popped it onto my little man and I am pretty pleased with it! Yay – wearable baby boy crochet!

Shawl Collar Crochet Baby Jumper

This whole project was really a vehicle for me to try out my shawl collar idea and I am so pleased with how that turned out. I just wish I had taken notes when I worked it out!

It was really intended for the autumn but winter/spring will be fine! I love the warm cosy colours and it still seems a bit 70s to me which I actually like.

A few technical notes for those who like to know!
It is all Stylecraft Special DK – soft, economical and hard wearing/washing! I have used shades Cream, Claret, Copper, Lime, Petrol & Gold.
The body is made of little 2 round granny squares with a third round of dc in each stitch, all joined by double crochet. The bottom edge is alternate fptr/bptr ribbing. The collar is my own design…. that I didn’t note down…. sigh. I do remember roughly and will reverse engineer the pattern at some point.

Hmmm, it might need a little cream edging around the arm holes though. What do you think?
