This blanket is definitely one of my favourite possessions at the moment. I can not tell you how much I love it, it makes me so happy!
After completing my first blanket and cushion cover I knew I needed to make more! My immediate desire was to work on another baby blanket, I was still heavily pregnant at this point and nesting!
I wanted to improve upon my last blanket in a few ways but most important to me was the texture and feel of it. My ripple blanket was made with 100% acrylic yarn which on the plus side was incredibly cheap to purchase but doesn’t create ever such a soft fabric when worked up.
For this blanket I went to my lovely local yarn store (Knit Connections) and had a feel of many different balls of yarn until I found one I liked in the colours I wanted. This happened to be Katia 100% Merino Extrafine for the colours, it is more expensive per ball but lovely and soft, perfect for a baby. Sadly, they didn’t have it in the cream colour I wanted so for this I was recommended a wool/acrylic/nylon blend, Jarol Heritage 4 ply. The two yarns have worked really well together.
I also wanted to try a slightly more complex pattern than the ripple, lovely as it is. I had thought initially to do a traditional granny square pattern but I stumbled across this slightly altered version in a magazine that centres on a circle and decided it appealed to me more. The edging I made up as I went along. For those interested, it is two rounds of granny clusters, three rounds of double crochet (sc in U.S), two rounds of chain loops, and shell edging worked in to each chain loop of the last round.
I loved making this blanket, it took a little while to make all the squares and join them all together but mainly because I’m still a little slow with my hook! It’s the perfect pram or crib sized blanket and it is ever so pretty! I am very proud to say that I have been complimented on it by everyone that has seen it! Oh and did I mention I love it?!
